Mauritius or Ile Maurice is still a hidden tourist spot for many travellers.

If soft sands and azure waters give you a thrill, then you will probably fall in love with this island.

And if you are looking to head here, then a car rental Mauritius is the latest trend of the season.

Moving on, did you know that Mauritius is home to the biggest waterfall on earth?

Yes, that’s true.

And it’s not just waterfalls!

You can drive around the island and have your fill of mouth watering curries, seafood, spectacular wildlife and tonnes of other activities.

A lot of tourists vacationing here are exploring the place with a car rental in Mauritius.

A road trip can be much more relaxing if you love to drive.

And by driving we don’t mean struggling between the first two gears in congested traffic.

The roads out here will give you the opportunity to get away from city traffic and experience what driving along the coastline feels like.

Here is a simple itinerary that you can opt for when looking to explore with car rentals Mauritius.

Before You Plan

Planning a road trip in Mauritius is a very complicated affair.

A driving license is all that you need. Good news is foreign driving licenses are easily accepted here so you don’t even need to worry about having a international driving license.

Driving signage is scattered well throughout the island. There are abundant petrol filling stations and they open till late at night.

The island is quite small to drive around in. You can drive from one corner to the other (north to south) in just under two hours easily. There isn’t much traffic problem except in a few commercial areas.

You don’t usually need GPS or a sim card in a smart card to navigate. Just grab a free map when you get your car rental in Mauritius.

And finding decent food is never really a problem. Public toilets are everywhere and so is sugarcane juice.

Makes sense, I guess…

Day 1 — Begin Your Trip With A Car Rental Mauritius

Upon arrival, as you exit the airport hall you can spot a hub of bureaux de change and car rental in Mauritius.

It is always good to pre-book with a service provider as it’s easy to do so online. You can also easily avoid any last minute surprises to be honest.

Just go up to your car provider, show your booking, load the luggage and you are good to go.

Choose a car that suits your group size, comfort and luxury requirements.

Day 2 — Poste Lafayette to Grand Baie Beach

In total, it just takes around 40–50 minutes to get here. Post Lafayette is full of hotels and resorts so this is quite a great place to start your trip.

Take the B15 to start your journey towards Grand Baie. Do take a quick dip at the Poste Lafayette Public Beach. If you walk North there is the Roches Noires, where the blue sea meets a massive black rock. The contrast is quite picturesque and energetic.

You can also head on the B13 to visit the very crowded Pereybere Beach. Lots of restaurants, boutiques and souvenir shops to check out here.

Heading up next on your way will be the La Cuvette Beach. I call it the beach of everything. Because you can literally find everything here, be it cliffs, rocks or sandy shores. If the heat is getting to you, head out for a swim. There are a few shower facilities out here.

The next and last stop for the day is at the Grand Baie Beach. A good place to end as you can party and find decent drinks out here. Make sure you have a sober plus one if you are driving with a car rental Mauritius.

Day 3 — Port Louis Waterfront to Mont Choisy Beach

Head in to the town (Port Louis) for some early morning treats. The waterfront is an amazing place for food and souvenir kiosks. There are quite a few places to explore here like St. James Cathedral and Fort Adelaide.

Drive straight on the B36 and in no time you will reach the most exquisite beach of Mauritius, Trou-aux-Biches. If you have a thing for adventure sports, then you can find a lot to do here.

I would very much recommend indulging in some snorkelling out here.

But if you want to be away from the crowd, right up ahead is the Mont Choisy Beach. End your day at this serene and peaceful beach to rejuvenate your spirits.

Day 4 — Chamarel Village to Maconde

Take a change of scenery and go off-coast this day. The Chamarel village is a nice place to begin your day. Start off with the seven colored earth and search the point that gives you a clear view of the Chamarel Waterfall.

The drive to Maconde is just around 15–20 mins. This small stairway is situated on the South tip of the country. Some amazing views you must definitely capture.

Day 5 — La Cambuse and Saying Goodbyes

Be all the beach bum you want to be at the La Cambuse beach with oddly shaped trees. You can drive back to the airport and hand off your vehicle at the car rental in Mauritius.

Holidays can be quite fun if you are driving around the place yourself. This is just a short 5 day road trip that you can plan with your peeps when in Mauritius.
